"Many years of neglecting my health led to a life of obesity, poor dietary habits, and a sedentary lifestyle. April 30th, 2007, at the age of 39, I joined the gym with the intention of walking on the treadmill 2-3 days a week in the hopes of losing some weight. Somewhere in the back of my mind was the nagging thought that I’ve never succeeded in losing weight in the past; however, I secretly hoped that this time would be different.

As a new member, I was introduced to a trainer, Ali Smith. With no expectations on my part, we spent the next three days together discussing the benefits of working with a trainer, diet planning, and exercise. In anticipation of Ali’s questions about my weight loss and fitness goals, I had been thinking about my long term and short term goals. In that tense moment when Ali asked me the anticipated questions, I shyly pulled a piece of crumpled paper from my purse that I had torn out of my very first Fitness magazine. I reluctantly presented the picture to Ali. It was a picture of a woman about 40 years old who had a very trim, athletic build. As Ali quietly scanned over the picture, I nervously held my breath hoping she wouldn’t laugh and praying that she would think I could accomplish this tremendous goal! Seconds seemed like minutes when Ali finally said, “So, you want to have an athletic build? We can do this.” I breathed a heavy sigh of relief! I felt elated!

From that moment on, Ali and I have worked hard together to help me accomplish my goals. I first set a goal of 75 lbs over 8 months (December 31, 2007). Within the first month of working out with Ali, I lost 23 lbs and a total of 8½ inches! It was astonishing to see my results. To date, I have lost over 50 lbs and a total of 20¼ inches!

I was asked to write a monthly report on my progress and I have agreed to do this for a few reasons: to help motivate and inspire me, to help keep me focused on my goals, and to let those supporting me know how I am progressing. A few people have offered me words of support and encouragement. Some have even shared their success stories to help inspire me. I enjoy hearing each success as I walk and gasp for air on the treadmill. Thanks for all the support and encouragement!"
