"It was my belief that everyone who works out to compete in a sporting event feels they are in good shape, so much for thinking! I had been running 2 marathons a year for the last 8 years when I felt it was time to take it to the next level. My goal was just to break 4 hours in every marathon I ran.
I noticed from the Ali’s bio that she was a runner and a triathlete, so what better way to improve then step up to the plate and get a personal trainer, and for me one who knows the sport I was looking to improve in.
So that statement about thinking I was in shape, not so much. Yes, I could run for hours as cardio was not my problem. It was when the pain started, it was all about the core training which was not even in my mind, or part of my training routine. First Ali laid out a training plan to develop the core areas which where failing me in the later miles of every marathon. After that we incorporated strength training. Both were specific to me and improving my running.
Since then every marathon has been under 4 hours with a personal best of 3:48. In fact, my training led me to sign up and then complete my first Half Ironman Triathlon in May 2008, something I never pictured myself doing.
Thanks to Ali's dedication and knowledge I was able to achieve my near term running goals and even complete a triathlon. With her help I am sure I will meet my ultimate goal of qualifying for the Boston marathon in the very near future.
